For roughly half of the breakbulk vessels carrying Chinese cranes to the UAE, the Suez route is no longer worth the risk-adjusted cost. The Cape route explained

China → Singapore → across Indian Ocean → around Cape of Good Hope → up the Atlantic to a Mediterranean or European port, then back through Suez southbound OR direct to UAE via the Arabian Sea.

For UAE-bound cargo, the shortest Cape variant is China → Cape → up east coast of Africa → Jebel Ali. Adds roughly 3,500 nautical miles and 10–14 sailing days.

Cape routing adds fuel (bunker consumption grows with distance) but avoids war-risk surcharges. Net freight cost is typically 5–15% higher than Suez routing but with fewer surprises. Insurance is straightforward — no additional war-risk premium.

Who picks Cape over Suez

• Larger breakbulk carriers with dedicated Asia-Africa services.
• Vessels insured by underwriters who exclude Red Sea transit entirely.
• Charterers moving high-value cargo where predictability > speed.
• Carriers whose crew unions have negotiated Red Sea avoidance.

Plan for the 45-day scenario. If your project date allows a nominal 32-day arrival, you have flexibility. If you need certainty, budget for the Cape timeline and treat any earlier arrival as a bonus.
